February marks Black History Month, and to celebrate, MacArthur Center’s Regal movie theater will offer free screenings to a movie about one of America’s iconic heroes, Harriet Tubman.
The film, titled “Harriet,” details the abolitionist’s life from her escape from slavery on Maryland’s Eastern Shore to Tubman’s rise as an activist leading the charge to free enslaved people along the East Coast.
With allies like abolitionist William Still, played by Leslie Odom Jr., and the entrepreneurial Marie Buchanon played by Janelle Monáe, Harriet risks capture and death to guide hundreds to safety as one of the most prominent conductors of the Underground Railroad.
Free screenings of the film will be offered on two dates, Tuesday, Feb. 4 and Tuesday, Feb. 11.
Cynthia Erivo, who plays the titular role of Harriet, has been nominated for two Academy Awards, one for best actress and another for best original song for “Stand Up,” which she co-wrote with Joshuah Brian Campbell.
