Some announced collaborations happen, but often, many do not. There are a bevy of reasons why many collabos do not come to fruition. At the end of the day, the disappointment usually falls at the feet of the fans.
We've recently seen DJ Premier & Nas drop a single and make an album collaboration announcement. We'll wait and see on the album...
Now it's Pete Rock & Common's turn. With the release of the first single, "Wise Up", it looks like the runway is clear for takeoff. What makes it even more exciting is the "album" has a title, The Auditorium Vol.1, which leads us to believe this is not just a one-off.
Pete freaked the classic Marley Marl/MC Shan sample that shines throughout. I've seen many complain about the off kilter engineering/sound of the song, particularly "The Bridge" sample, “Why don’t you wise up? Show all the people in the place [that you are bright].”
We have gotten spoiled with the clean digital sound, but for me, I love the dusty, dirty sound. It reminds me of the 90's nostalgia of the SP1200 sound. "Wise Up" is the past, present, and future happening all at once
Either way, Hip-Hop remains alive and it's a blessing to have our 90's hip hop superheroes still in the lab, releasing quality work.
