Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Opens Charter School in Harlem

Sean “Diddy” Combs has opened a school in Harlem, the neighborhood where he grew up is where he’s now trying to improve education, abc7.com reports.

The news site notes that Combs began working on the project five years ago, and the Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School is modeled after a similar school in Connecticut that was founded by educator Steve Perry.

“I will tell you, I spent a considerable amount of time saying are you sure you want to do this,” Perry said. “Because once we go public with this thing, people are going to question both of us.”

Combs believes that his school is the best way to help children in the neighborhood. Capital Prep Harlem sits at East 104th Street and will eventually host grades six through 12.

“If I have anything to do with it, they’re going to have a fair playing field,” he said. “And they’re going to be the future leaders of our country.”

According to Heavy.com, Diddy has an estimated net worth of $750 Million and earned $62 million in 2016. Forbes ranks him as No. 22 on the 2016 Celebrity 100 list. He also topped their Forbes Five list of wealthy hip-hop musicians.

Combs’ Bad Boy Records was once worth $100 million and is now distributed by Sony. In 2014, Diddy lead a re-branding campaign to reach millennials. As he explained to AdWeek:

“I am that blend of art and commerce. So I pay attention to the business needs, the sensitivities of my partners and how to manage budgets, how to market a great product. But at the same time, I know how to use marketing and entertainment. I enjoy that creative process because it lets me go into that artistic side, not the celebrity side, that’s in me.”
